Yoo Fai Questions & Honest Answers
By Emmy Nestled, Traditional Thai and Western Postpartum Doula.
1. Understanding the Service
Yoo Fai is a traditional Thai postpartum care ritual for new mothers. The idea is that after birth, a woman’s body becomes “cold” and weak, and gentle warmth helps her heal faster. Through herbal compresses, massage, and steam therapy, this method supports circulation, hormone balance, and emotional recovery.
Relaxing like a spa day, but Emmy Nestled makes it private and comfortable for new moms in your own space.
Western postpartum care focuses on emotional support, baby care, and nutrition.
Thai care adds body-based healing, using herbs and heat to restore the mother’s body physically. Together, they make a complete care system — mental, emotional, and physical.
Each session combines natural warmth, herbal therapy, and gentle touch.
Depending on your package and needs, it may include:
– Warm herbal compress and abdominal massage
– Herbal steam or bath
– Light postpartum body massage
– Warm herbal tea
Each day builds upon the last for deeper recovery and energy balance.
Yes, it can be — with proper care and timing. At Emmy Nestled, every Yoo Fai session is adapted to your unique recovery. We always ensure your incision is fully healed and encourage you to consult with your doctor first before beginning any heat-based therapy.
For C-section mothers, we recommend waiting at least 30 days after birth or when you’re fully healed before starting Yoo Fai to allow your body the time it needs to recover safely.
My main focus is the mother’s recovery. However, the mother’s healing directly supports the baby’s well-being — when you’re rested, calm, and balanced, your baby feels it too. So when you’re resting, I’ll make sure your baby is safe.
No. While it may feel relaxing, this is not a spa treatment. This is a postpartum healing system rooted in Thai tradition. Every technique — the warmth, herbs, compresses, steaming, and guided rest — is designed to support your recovery after birth, not just provide surface-level relaxation.
No. Postpartum mothers are extremely fragile, especially in the first few weeks.
Your body is still adjusting — the joints are loose, the abdomen is tender, and the tissues are healing.
Because of this, I provide very light, gentle massage using warmed herbal compresses.
It is not deep pressure or muscle-focused like a spa massage.
It is designed to:
– Relax the body safely
– encourage circulation
– release tension without strain
– support recovery without risking injury
Spas focus on comfort and pampering. Traditional postpartum care focuses on restoring the body, supporting circulation, and guiding recovery during one of the most vulnerable times of a mother’s life. The heat work, herbs, and gentle techniques are chosen specifically to support your body’s internal healing.
Heat is central to postpartum recovery in many cultures. It helps:
– improve circulation
– reduce swelling
– release tension
– support uterine healing
– calm the nervous system
– promote faster recovery
This is called heat healing, not spa aromatherapy or simple relaxation. It is therapeutic, intentional, and restorative.
Healing and relaxation naturally overlap. A calm environment helps the body repair more quickly, so your session may feel peaceful, but it is therapeutic. The goal is to support your physical and emotional recovery, not just create a temporary relaxing experience.
Weekly sessions are available, but traditional postpartum healing works best through a structured plan — not occasional self-care visits. Packages allow you to receive consistent, progressive care that supports deeper recovery.
2. Safety and Medical Concerns
Thai postpartum care has been practiced for centuries and is supported by modern herbal studies for its anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits, but it is not a medical practice. Also, all the herbs and treatments are used externally only.
Yes. Before starting, I review your birth details, stitches, bleeding level, and general health. If needed, I will ask you to confirm with your healthcare provider first. Safety always comes before tradition.
If you have any infection or fever, we will postpone heat-based treatments until you’re fully recovered. I will be checking your temperature and blood pressure before every session.
I use pure, food-grade herbs with no chemicals. But I will always ask first if you have any allergies to the herbs that will be used.
If you’re not sure whether you have an allergy (for example, to ginger or turmeric), we’ll test a small area first.
No — the aroma is natural and mild. Most herbs used (ginger, lemongrass, lime) are calming and safe for postpartum use. The scent usually fades within a few hours, leaving only a soft herbal warmth.
3. Service Logistics
All services are in-home. You stay comfortable in your own environment while I bring everything — herbs, tools, and materials.
Usually 2-3 hours, depending on your comfort and recovery needs. This does not include setup and pack-up time
Just a private space with air circulation. I will bring everything else.
Yes, absolutely. Partners are welcome to observe or learn simple techniques to help continue your care between sessions.
A little — but in a pleasant, spa-like way. The natural herbal scent usually fades within a few hours.
We will plan sessions according to your baby’s routine. Many mothers prefer treatments after feeding, so the baby can rest while you receive care.
4. Pricing and Value
Prices vary by package (3, 5, 7, or 10, and 30 days). You can also book a single trial session first. Each package includes travel, herbs, and preparation.
Unfortunately, no. Most insurance plans don’t cover traditional care.
Because it’s not just a massage — it’s a full-body healing ritual that shortens recovery time, improves comfort, and helps prevent postpartum exhaustion. You’re investing in your long-term well-being.
Yes. You can purchase a package as a postpartum gift — it’s one of the most appreciated gifts for new mothers.
5. Cultural and Emotional Understanding
It’s based on the belief that the body’s elements (earth, water, wind, fire) fall out of balance after birth.
“Yoo Fai” restores the fire element — the warmth that supports blood flow, emotional balance, and recovery. It’s both physical and symbolic: warmth equals care, nourishment, and renewal.
No. It’s a cultural healing practice, not a religious one. You don’t need to believe in any ritual — it’s simply about warmth, relaxation, and nurturing care.
Yes. The method blends Thai postpartum practices and Western postpartum practices. I will explain every step, so you feel informed, respected, and comfortable throughout.
Not at all. Other than Thai herbs, you will feel like you are in a comforting spa with natural aromas and gentle care, but in your home.
6. Results
You can expect to feel:
– Warmer and lighter in your body
– Less swelling and pain
– Improved milk flow
– Better sleep and mood
– A sense of being “put back together” after giving birth
Most mothers feel improvement after the first or second session — especially in circulation, muscle tension, and relaxation. Full recovery benefits are built over several days.
Every mother’s body heals differently. Sometimes the benefits are subtle at first (better sleep, more energy), then deepen over time. I can always adjust techniques to your comfort level.
7. Partners and Family Concerns
Yes — it’s completely safe and designed for postpartum recovery. It doesn’t replace medical care, but it adds a healing dimension that hospitals don’t provide: warmth, touch, and cultural nurturing.
No — it complements it. All treatments are adjusted to your doctor’s recommendations.
Each session is calm and private. There is no loud equipment or invasive methods — just natural herbal warmth, massage, and gentle conversation.
